Restoration

Cairdshill Quarry

Due to the relatively compact nature of this quarry, and the space needed to store significant quantities of materials, the potential for progressive restoration is limited. However, the scheme involves replacement of material in the Quarry floor as soon as possible and this can be seen on development plans from Phase 3 onwards.

During the last periods of excavation, surplus materials will be used to complete reinstatement of the Quarry floor and to regrade slopes to create a landform that integrates with the surrounding area.

The final restoration of the quarried area will include some grassland, scree slopes, areas of tree and shrub planting, exposed rock and specie rich grassland for nature conservation and biodiversity. It is also proposed to create small scrapes in the quarry floor where surface water run-off may accumulate to form seasonal wetlands. A significant proportion of the southern extension area will be reinstated to improved grassland or arable. All buildings, equipment and plant shall be removed, and the site access area shall be reinstated to grassland, trees and shrubs.

Following restoration, the site will be subject to a statutory five-year aftercare scheme under Tarmac’s stewardship. Tarmac owns part of the quarry but leases areas from two other landowners; so these areas would be handed back after restoration and aftercare is complete.
